Lilia and Jakob are getting married!

Our Story

After moving to Munich from California for her Master’s degree in September of 2018, Lilia decided to give online dating a try. When Jakob turned up to our first date in canary-yellow pants, she knew she was about to meet someone special! We watched the sunset over the city, chatted for hours, and promptly fell in love. We dated long distance while both studying abroad in Edinburgh and Barcelona, and immediately knew that being apart just wasn’t going to work. So Lilia and Jakob moved in together into an apartment in Westend, Munich. Jakob came to California for Christmas to meet Lilia’s famiy, and learned an important lesson about how much fun it is to live in a house full of dogs.

Just a few months after moving in together, the world shut down, and we both felt very lucky to be locked down with someone so easy to get along with. Jakob was an excellent German teacher (even if Lilia was often a very impatient student), and spent countless hours on government websites and waiting in line helping to make sure Lilia had the right Visa to stay in Germany. Once things calmed down, we decided to make our lives more complicated again by adopting a very challenging dog! The minute Salty came home with us, it was clear that the three of us belonged together.

After years of first pandemic and later dog-related travel restritions, we made it back to California. Jakob proposed on a beautiful sunny March day overlooking the cliffs in Mendecino county - he didn’t realize he was supposed to prepare a speech, but it didn’t matter, she had already said yes. We both agree that we are already a family, and can’t wait for the government to coroberate this fact, and of course, celebrate with the rest of our newly-united family, all of you!

Is there a dress code? What is it?

We want our guests to feel comfortable dressing however they please, and invite everyone to dress-up (whatever that means to you, dressing-up is half the fun of a wedding anwyay!). The ceremony will take place on a grass lawn, so plan your footwear accordingly. For reference, the bride and groom will be wearing a white dress and suit. If you need more direction, wear something that makes you feel fabulous!

Can I bring a plus one?

Yes! Please let us know who you are bringing when you RSVP.

Are children welcome?

Yes, your children are invited! Please indicate how many kids you’re bringing with you and their ages when you RSVP. (TODO add sometihng about not falling in the river)

What time should I arrive?

Plan to arrive for the start of the wedding at 14:00, (2:00 PM for Americans), the ceremony will start about a half-hour later.

Is parking available?

Yes, there is a free parking lot available directly at the restaurant, but spots might be limited.

I am from out-of-town. Where should I stay in Munich? Are there rooms blocked?

Munich is very well-connected via subways, busses, trams etc. so anywhere you stay in the city proper will have good connections to the wedding location, the city center, etc. Since people will have pretty diverse travel plans, we dont have a block of rooms reserved in a hotel. (TODO add info about the actual hotel)If you need help finding a place to stay, get in touch!

Do you have a registry or a wish list?

The short answer is no - what we want more than anything is for you to come to our wedding, have a great time, eat, drink be merry etc! This more than enough! (That being said, the Salty treat fund is always accepting cash donations).

Are there vegetarian or vegan meal options?

Of course! We will send out a questionaire regarding the meal choices hopefully soon after your R.S.V.P.

Are there any local customs or traditions we should know about?

Traditionally, bavarian couples might break plates the day before their wedding, wear Tracht (Dirndl and Lederhosen) on their wedding day, work together to saw off a piece of a log inscribed with their initials, or even kidnap the bride for ransom during the wedding. We won’t be doing any of that :)

What are some fun things to do in the area?

There is endless fun to be had in southern Germany! In Munich, you can go shopping in the old city, swim in the Isar at the English Garten, have a beer in a traditional biergarten, visit Museums and even a palace. Outside of the city, there are several nearby castles (Schloss Neuschwanstein, Schloss Linderhof), lakes (Ammersee, Worthsee, Starnbergersee, Chiemsee), and plenty of hiking in the Alps.

What is a Freie Trauung? Is there going to be a religious ceremony?

In Germany, only civil ceremonies taking place at city-hall are legally binding, so a Freie Trauung is a non-religious, non-legally binding wedding ceremony (We will most likely already be legally married on the big day!)

Can I pet Salty? Can I bring my own dog?

Not if you want to keep your fingers. Sadly, Salty is not a big fan of people, so we decided with a heavy heart to have Salty spend the week in his favorite hotel rather than with us all.

Warum ist das alles hier auf Englisch? Wir sind doch hier in Deutschland…

Tja mei, ich war zu faul, das alles zu übersetzen. Die Hochzeit selber vermutlich auch zum Großteil auf Englisch stattfinden aus Respekt unserer Internationalen Gäste. Falls jemand Verständnisfragen hat, bitte gerne jederzeit melden.

Public Transport

The public transportation network in Munich is very good and although the venue is located outside of the city center, you can reach it from the central station in less than 30 minutes. For most people, we would suggest taking the S-Train S2 to Untermenzing, and either walking 10 mins from there or changing to bus 164 or X80, riding it for two mins to Von-Kahr-Straße - the restaurant is directly across the street from the Von-Kahr-Straße bus stop. Refer to the official MVG Website or App or simply Google Maps for detailed instructions on the quickest way to reach it from your stay. For getting back home after the party, the last S-Train from Untermenzing typically leaves at 02:20 AM, but trains from the Pasing S-Train station run throughout the night. Uber and Taxi services are also available.

Tickets for the public transport can be purchased on the stations or online and have to be bought before starting the trip. If you are staying for a longer period of time, it might be worth to get a weekly pass.

Arriving by Car & Parking

Some parking is available directly at the restaurant, more public street parking is available at and around the cemetary. But we do suggest to try and come with public transport if possible.

We appreciate everyone coming from all around the world to celebrate with us. So if you are staying a few days in Munich, and we would highly recommended that you do, we decided to organize a few extracurricular activities for you to join.

• Traditional German Weisswurstkaterfrühstück (White Sausage Hangover Breakfast) on Sunday morning (the 12th) at Augustiner Keller
• Train and boat trip to and on Chiemsee
